You do not have to backpack the entire Lost Coast Trail to experience its wild character. Starting at Black Sands Beach in Shelter Cove gives you a manageable way to sample this rugged coastline, where steep mountains drop toward the Pacific and every mile feels remote.

A well-planned Lost Coast Trail day hike is less about chasing distance and more about respecting the ocean, tides, and surprisingly difficult beach terrain.

Start at Black Sands Beach

Black Sands Beach is the southern trailhead for the northern section of the Lost Coast Trail, which runs 24.6 miles north toward Mattole.

Day hikers do not need the overnight wilderness permit required for backpacking, so you can simply head north and turn around when conditions or timing tell you to.

The first thing to understand is that this is not ordinary trail walking. Much of the route crosses loose sand, rounded rocks, and steep beach surfaces that can slow you down considerably.

Keep Your Turnaround Point Conservative

Do not plan your outing around hitting one specific landmark. Instead, give yourself a time-based turnaround.

The Bureau of Land Management advises hikers to expect travel speeds around one mile per hour in tidal terrain. If you have four safe daylight hours available, that does not automatically mean an eight-mile round trip.

Factor in stops, changing beach conditions, and the return journey.

Plan Around the Tides

Tide planning is essential. Several sections of the Lost Coast Trail become impassable at high tide.

BLM guidance says hikers should cross tidal zones on an outgoing tide of three feet or less, with the tide remaining below three feet for the entire crossing. Review the official Lost Coast tide-safety information before leaving Shelter Cove.

Never assume you can simply rush around a point or get your feet wet to continue.

Wear Real Hiking Footwear

Use supportive hiking boots or sturdy trail shoes with good traction. Trekking poles can also help on cobbles, loose sand, and creek crossings.

Bring water, food, sun protection, layers, and a downloaded map. Coastal weather can shift quickly.

Respect the Ocean

Stay high on the beach, avoid wet sand when possible, and never turn your back on the Pacific. Sneaker waves are a real hazard, and swimming is not recommended along this exposed coastline.
