California’s Lost Coast is famous for rugged beaches and remote wilderness, but experienced riders know there is another reason to head into the King Range: the Paradise Royale mountain bike trail. This purpose-built singletrack delivers demanding climbs, fast descents, technical features, and deep forest scenery in one seriously memorable ride.
Where Is the Paradise Royale Trail?
Paradise Royale sits inside the King Range National Conservation Area, not far inland from Shelter Cove.
From Highway 101, riders can follow the Shelter Cove route west from Redway before turning onto King Peak Road. The road becomes dirt, and the Paradise Royale day-use trailhead is approximately two miles up King Peak Road. Nearby Tolkan Campground also provides convenient access for riders making a weekend of it.
Expect a Challenging Ride
The main Paradise Royale mountain bike trail loop is approximately 13 miles, with the larger trail system offering about 25 miles of riding and more than 2,200 feet of elevation gain and loss.
This is not casual beginner terrain. Expect sustained climbing, tight turns, roots, rocks, bridges, creek crossings, and technical trail features.
Sections such as the infamous Prince of Pain climb demand fitness and patience, while faster descending terrain rewards confident bike handling. Many constructed features have alternate lines, but riders should still be comfortable on advanced singletrack before committing to the full loop.
Why Experienced Riders Make the Trip
Paradise Royale was specifically designed and built for a mountain-bike-optimized experience. That makes it different from simply riding a hiking trail that happens to allow bikes.
The route twists through Douglas-fir forest, drops into remote backcountry terrain, and combines natural features with modern trail construction. Riders wanting an even bigger day can connect to the Pacific Rim Trail, adding roughly nine miles and opportunities for forest and ocean views.
That combination of challenging terrain and Lost Coast isolation is exactly why mountain bikers travel so far to ride here.
Come Prepared
Bring a well-maintained trail or enduro bike, helmet, repair kit, tire plugs or spare tube, pump, multitool, food, and plenty of water. Download the official Paradise Royale mountain biking map before leaving reliable service.
Weather can change quickly near the coast, so pack an extra layer and lightweight rain protection.
Check Conditions Before You Ride
Before leaving Shelter Cove, check current conditions with the King Range Project Office. Storms, road issues, wildfire activity, or trail maintenance can affect access.
